About Us

Scottish Families Affected by Alcohol and Drugs (Scottish Families) aims to support families who are affected by someone else’s alcohol and/or drug misuse and raise awareness of the issues that affect them.

It was set up in 2003 by concerned parents who wanted a national organisation that could support them and advocate at a national level on issues which affect them through others’ drugs misuse.

We have now expanded our remit to include families affected by alcohol misuse.

We are a membership organisation that works on behalf of families and family support groups providing information, support and advice.

As a commissioned agency we have close links with Scottish Government, the Scottish Recovery Consortium and other peer organisations such as Scottish Drugs Forum and Families Outside.

Information, Support and Advice

We want families to have easy access to the information that they need to help their relative and to help themselves. We do this through the website, the helpline phone and email.

Website visitors can access information, search for their nearest support services and find inspiration from stories of real life recovery. We also have a free and confidential Helpline 08080 10 10 11 and web based support at www.sfad.org.uk, which is monitored by staff and trained volunteers.

Local Support

Scottish Families have staff in specific local areas that offer support to families through advocacy, one to one and group support and have recently been commissioned by the Forth Valley ADP to provide such a service across Stirling, Falkirk and Clackmannanshire View Available Support

Although we are only able to support adult family members (18 years and over) we will be able to direct you to other age appropriate services if applicable.

From the experience we have gained over the years working with families and organisations that support families, we are able to provide training to the alcohol and drug, and wider workforce to increase support provision for families.

Scottish Families can create and deliver bespoke training to suit an organisation’s needs to ensure it is family centred, family sensitive and family inclusive. To discuss your training needs contact Scott Clements, Head of Programmes on 0141 221 0544 or training@sfad.org.uk.

Scottish Families is also able to provide information on policy developments and participate in relevant consultation exercises. For more information on how you can participate email policy@sfad.org.uk or call 0141 221 0544.
